Children's Aquarium at Fair Park

Today we joined homeschooling church friends at the Children's Aquarium at Fair Park for their Homeschool Day. Several years ago this aquarium closed down to for a complete remodel.  The museum is now home to fabulous fresh water zone with takes of eels, piranhas and snapping turtles found in those areas.  There is also an intertidal zone with exotic fish. 

The aquarium is part of the Dallas Zoo so today for the Homeschool event there was staff on hand for demonstrations with the kids.  There were special feedings for the kids to observe, including the piranhas.  They were also able to pet the sting rays in the petting tanks.

Today we visited the Dallas World Aquarium with about sixty-five of our home schooling friends. The aquarium is three stories, with all kinds of wildlife and habitats, with large glass aquariums.  Our last visit to the Dallas Aquarium was about this time last year and it was neat to see the updates they've made since our last visit.  The aquarium features a large shark tank that you can walk under, similar to the Oklahoma Aquarium, Oklahoma's tank is larger, but the Dallas tank you can walk around and view it from the top. 

The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth,

Dallas World Aquarium

In the almost ten years we have been in Dallas, this was our first trip to the Dallas World Aquarium. We joined 90 of our homeschool friends for a simple education experience, I mean an in-depth study of the habitat, conservation, distribution, anatomy, reproduction and behavioral/structural adaptations of plants and animals..We came home with great curriculum to further our indoor adventure. The refurbished 1801 three story warehouse turned museum is in the Historic West End District in Downtown Dallas. The upper levels showcase mixed avian species as they fly freely throughout the vegetation, foraging for food, building nests, caring for their young or preening at the top of the 40-foot waterfall. Mammals, ranging in size from small Vampire bats to large Antillean manatees, share the rainforest with amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates and fish..
Our favorite exhibits included the manatee, the spotted stingray, and the spotted leopard.

Oklahoma Aquarium

The little kids and I are in Tulsa with Dad, while Mimi is in Kansas City. Today we took Dad to the Oklahoma Aquarium. It is one of those fun spots we enjoy visiting when we are in town. The kids love the hands-on activities like feeding the turtles, petting the star fish, and petting the sting rays. The shark tank is amazing. It is 420,000 gallons of man made saltwater housing three types of sharks. The kids brought their aquarium guide from Answers in Genesis so we don't have to worry about the 'billions of years' junk that is usually posted in most 'scientific' field trips. A friend of mine was laughing last night at the 'if we evolved from frogs with legs. . . blah, blah, blah' why do we still have frogs. Anyway. . .it was a fun day, the kids enjoyed being with Dad and impressing them with all their knowledge.

Oklahoma Aquarium

While in Oklahoma, we checked out the more than 200 exhibits at the Oklahoma Aquarium, featuring thousands of salt and fresh water species and also mammals. The children enjoyed feeding the turtles and the sting rays. They also petted the sting rays, starfish and other scaly creatures. The coral reef and the shark tank were a big hit too. We'll be back to see the otters!
