Little Sauces

After we dropped Sissy off with her grandparents, we stopped by a roadside stand and purchased a couple of baskets of beautiful, red tomatoes. Today I taught the children how to make and preserve homemade marinara sauce. Caleb's favorite part was dipping the tomatoes in hot water for a few seconds and then into cold water. I explained to him how this made the 'skin' easier to peel off. He compared it to a boil or blister on skin, and the way the skin peels away from your flesh. Good analogy. . . but gross!

Abigail enjoyed processing the tomatoes through the strainer, separating juice and pulp from the seeds. Frankie's favorite part was that she was out of town and didn't have to hyperventilate over the mess I make when I'm canning. We ended up with 11 quarts of delicious spaghetti sauce. Made with fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic and even fresh basil and oregano from our garden.
