Bible Class Billy!

After spending most of my day as Bible Class Betty I think this post should be titled Bible Class Billy! Tonight Jon, Frankie an I filled in teaching the toddler class.

These days Jon is sporting a pretty full beard that has gone all gray, hence he has begin calling himself Bible Class Billy.

This is the same age group where we met Frankie in Bible Class and would later adopt her through foster care. Frankie grabbed by phone and snapped these fun pictures or us playing with the kids.

Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;

teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
Proverbs 9:9

The Boys

Abigail got to spend the afternoon with her boys.  She absolutely adores these guys. They are board game playing, baseball loving, bicycle riding an playing at the park boys!

The girls jumps on every opportunity to hang out with them.  I love their sweet smiles together.  She always snaps a few pictures together as they hang out and there are always these great smiles!

The streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. Zechariah 8:5

Bible Class Betty Goes to School

Bible Class Betty returned to the preschool today to read stories to the kids on Pajama Day! I brought out several of Frankie's Clifford books and even her favorite Clifford house slippers!  The kids loved the Clifford books, but I'm not sure what they thought about the wig, glasses and granny PJs!

Abigail also joined in on the fun coming to the preschool in her unicorn PJs!

If you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Last week HSAA scrimmaged against Ursuline Academy.  It was a good warm up for both teams to allow all the players to hit and check them out at various positions.  Now tonight was game time!

Below is the write up from Game Changer an online streaming sports site that allows you to watch high school and select sports on your phone or computer.

Dallas Opera Teacher Professional Development

Every opera season the Dallas Opera hosts a Teacher Professional Development night. The Opera's Education Department provides teachers with material to prepare students for upcoming performances.

The go over where in history the opera was composed along with influence and contemporaries at the time the music was composed.  There is a history of the story,  characters, and opera art-form prior to the program.

The class include a tour of the beautiful Winspear Opera House. For the 2017-2018 season we took students to the fall performance of Samson and Dalila and next week we are taking a group of student to The Ring of Polykrates.

I really enjoy the music history presented and the tie in to student teaching materials.

I will incline my ear to a proverb;

I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.
Psalm 49:4

Reunion Tower & GeO Deck

While we were down today we headed over to Reunion Tower, or the famous ball in Dallas' skyline.

From 470 feet up you can see a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of Dallas.  The GeO deck has  high-definition zoom cameras, interactive touch screens, and  telescopes.  There is also and outdoor observation deck that lets you see for miles in any direction.

There are also 3-D virtual reality glasses where that allow you lean out over the rails of the observation deck.  Abigail enjoyed the view, Frankie liked the interactive games inside!

The Reunion Tower is attached to the Hyatt Regency Dallas hotel where the kids attend Leadership Training for Christ.

The Lord looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
from where he sits enthroned he looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
Psalm 33:13-15

JFK Trolley Tour

With the four years that Caleb served on the Youth Advisory Council for The Sixth Floor Museum we got to see lots of really great pieces of history.  Some of my favorites were witnessing the taping of the Living History series. These were key people on the day of JFK's assassination and events that followed.  We were also able to be on hand when Stephen King debuted his 11.22.63: A Novel.

Caleb was immersed in the events he has a great working knowledge of the events that transpired during that time in American history.   Now it was time to give the girls a better understanding of that time period.  We took the JFK Trolley Tour departing Daley Plaza.  The trolley traced the parade route and placed related to Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby.

The tour traced the route Lee Harvey Oswald traveled after the shooting, including the house where he rented a room. After the shooting, Oswald took a cab to his boarding room, 2 or 3 miles from the Texas School Book Depository, then on to where Oswald shoot the police officer J.D. Tippit then on to the Texas Theatre where he was captured. All interesting in the timing and location from downtown.

It was interest to hear the actual audio of the Dallas PD calling in Tippit's shooting. The Dallas Police Department arrested Oswald for the killing Officer Tippit only late to tie back to the JFK assignation later in the day, when they realized Oswald was the only Texas School Book Depository employee unaccounted for.

Last portion of tour was back to the Dallas City and County Jails where Oswald was shot. We also saw where Ruby's night club was located.  We also saw the street entrance where Ruby slid in with reporters to kill Oswald.

It was really fascinating to lay out the pieces in a sequential narrated fashion.  It was also amazing how small downtown Dallas was in 1963!  Caleb would love it!

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.  Ecclesiastes 1:9

Softball College Signing

This afternoon Abigail's team mate and buddy, AC signed with Jarvis College to play softball.   Official signing day is February 8th, but the college came out to let AC sign in front of her select team, tEAMSMiTH. The team got to share in AC's celebration and team pictures were sent out to the tEAMSMiTH Softball organization.
Afterwards the girls got in a two hour practice!

And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.

Sunday Selfies

Between class and review games, Abigail got today's class to take a Sunday selfie to send to the Ada congregation.  The sweet kids were all smiles this morning.

Tim Hawkins Tour

For Christmas each year we try to get one gift that is a family gift, something we can enjoy together. This year our family gift was tickets to see Christian comedian, songwriter, and singer, Tim Hawkins.

He's probably best known for parodying popular songs such as Carrie Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel", Kansas's "Dust in the Wind", and "The Candy Man." He has nine comedy DVD's out with great stand-up material based on topics such as homeschooling, marriage and parenting.

We love his side splitting humor and it was even more enjoyable seeing him live in an auditorium of Tim Hawkins enthusiast.  The show was at a local church with seating for 2,000 people.

The show also included another Christian comedian, Dustin Nickerson who I'm sure we'll be hearing more great things about soon because he was so funny!

We had a great evening.  Frankie wasn't too sure about it though, she said he talked way too fast!

Then our mouth was filled with laughter
And our tongue with joyful shouting;
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
Psalm 126:2

HSAA Angels vs. John Paul II

One more scrimmage before the softball season begins, so we are at John Paul II High School in Plano. John Paul II High School is a private Roman Catholic college preparatory high school with about 1,200 students.

The school has one of the nicest facilities we will play at this year.  The girls are especially appreciative of the heated dugouts early in the season!

HSAA has upgraded the ability to watch the games live on Game Changer, a mobile app that provides score keeping, stats, Live Game Streams, and recap stories.  The screen capture of Abigail's hit to left field!

Here is the game recap from tonight's game on Game Changer:

HSAA Angels Varsity Clinches Lead In Seventh Inning To Defeat John Paul II
HSAA Angels Varsity took the lead late in the game in an 11-10 victory over John Paul II on Friday. The game was tied at nine with HSAA Angels Varsity batting in the top of the seventh when an error scored two runs for HSAA Angels Varsity.

Abigail Ratliff led HSAA Angels Varsity to victory by driving in four runs. She went 3-for-4 at the plate. Ratliff drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the sixth, and a single in the seventh.
HSAA Angels Varsity took an early lead in the second inning. HSAA Angels Varsity scored one run when Abigail Kirkwood singled.

John Paul II scored four runs in the fourth inning. John Paul II batters contributing to the big inning included #16, Molly, and #3, all driving in runs in the inning.

Sarah Durham toed the rubber for HSAA Angels Varsity. She lasted four innings, allowing 11 hits and eight runs while striking out one and walking one.

Molly toed the rubber for John Paul II. She allowed 14 hits and seven runs over five innings, striking out one. #6 threw two innings in relief.

HSAA Angels Varsity racked up 17 hits. Kirkwood, Ratliff, Ryleigh Horton, Kaitlyn Callaway, and Elise Bonenberger all collected multiple hits for HSAA Angels Varsity. Ratliff and Kirkwood all had three hits to lead HSAA Angels Varsity.

Pretty cool, right!  Tonight was a good battle, with the Angels batting their full rooster and finishing off with an 11-10 win!  Here is a short clip of one of Abigail's hits from tonight.

All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23

LCU's Study Abroad Honors College Chapel

Richard texted me these wonderful photos of Caleb leading singing and reading scripture at LCU's chapel today.  The Study Abroad Honors College led chapel complete with a video of their adventures last semester.

Several of the kids shared their stories from the semester including one telling about the group  (Caleb, Reagan, Jake, and Jessica) who climbed Mount Olympus.  It was a time to share with the student body the awesome opportunity of the Honors College.

Oklahoma Christian University

Last night Abigail and I made the drive north to Edmond, Oklahoma.  Oklahoma Christian University hosted an all day College Fair for homeschooled students.

It was a day filled with information on transcripts, dual credit, AP classes and entrance information.  Abigail wanted to check out their Honors Program that is similar to the path Caleb is taking at Lubbock Christian University.

It was by far the most organized college fair we've attended.  They had a lot of information that would have been helpful three years ago when we were getting Caleb college prepped.  Oh well!

Abigail visited with the Business department and looked at what dual credit classes she should be taking to come into college as a sophomore.  We toured the campus and the dorms.  There are so many changes from when I attended OC.  I only wish there had been a Chick-fil-A on campus when I was a student.

Abigail spent some time with Coach Heath, OC's softball coach on an unofficial NCAA visit.  They have a great rooster this year and should have a strong team this season.

It was a great visit with almost too much information. Now for a little girl to decimate what she wants to do!

An intelligent heart acquires knowledge,
and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

HSAA Angels vs. Ursuline Academy of Dallas

High school has begun!  This is the first school season for HSAA's Angels Softball.  Abigail and the girls could not be more excited about starting off the season.

This was the teams first scrimmage of the season at Ursuline Academy of Dallas. Ursuline is a Catholic college preparatory high school for girls with a 20+K annual tuition.

Ursuline is a member of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dallas and was founded in 1874, making it the oldest school in the city of Dallas.  it was founded by the Ursuline Sisters.  Ursuline has an average of 800 high school students.

The school has beautiful facilities and we've always enjoyed playing there when we were with the CHANT Chargers.  Tonight was no exception, they are always gracious hosts.

Coach took the opportunity to play everyone in tonight's scrimmage to give some of our new, younger players the opportunity to play.  Next week we will have an actual competitive game!

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 1 Peter 4:8-9

The Science of Softball

This was another great evening for PEACH's Junior Toastmaster meeting. Abigail gave a Demonstration Speech the Science of Softball! She demonstrated various softball pitches and gave the physics behind the difference in baseball and softball.

Frankie took a great group picture of this year's Junior Toastmasters Club. In the video, the first words are Science is difficult.

O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. 1 Timothy 6:20-20

Intentionality Family Conference

Our fabulous church family hosted their first Family Conference.  It was an incredibly informative seminar for parents and grandparents of all ages.  The theme for the day was "Intentionality:  Living as Kingdom Families."

The day kicked off with keynote speaker, Robert Ogelsby Jr., Director of Youth and Family Ministry at Abilene Christian University speaking on Living a Deuteronomy 6 Life.  The afternoon keynote was McDermott's own Wes McAdams speaking on 'Raising Your Kids in a Performance Driving World.'

There were other great classes to choose from during the day with the following classes:
  • Intentional About Media and Technology
  • Developing a God-Honoring Family Schedule
  • How to Talk to Your Kids in a Christlike Way
  • Living Out Your Faith in a Way That Impacts Your Children

While the adults attended classes there were activities and classes for infants through 5th graders. High School aged McDermott kids took care of the younger kids classes.  Abigail and Frankie worked with the 1st-3rd grade classes.  Jon and I peaked in at lunch to check on the class having a good time singing songs and playing games with the girls.

I'm looking forward to next year's conference January 19, 2019!

You may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son's son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long. Deuteronomy 6:2

Preschool Portfolio

Today I broadened my childcare portfolio.  The congregation that originally planted the McDermott church was the Waterview Church of Christ.  They have a preschool that meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The school offers classes for one-five years olds.

Today I substituted for one of their teachers with the sweet one year old class.  Together we played, did a little artwork, had music class and read Bible stories.

After lunch is nap time for this adorable group.  There is a new little girl in the class that is still adjusting to the nap schedule, so they asked if I would mind rocking her to sleep.  What?  Would I mind holding a sweet baby and rocking her to sleep?  That's what I'm there for! I am going to have to refresh my lullaby repertoire!

If you lie down, you will not be afraid;

when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Searching for Fun

The PEACH Jr./Sr. Club got together for a photo scavenger hunt. The teens broke up into groups and then using their phone they took photos of the items on their lists.  Items like:

  • A member in a 5" hill
  • A member hugging a stranger
  • The team on an escalator
  • The team in matching shirts
  • The team trying food samples

There were plenty of fun ideas to keep the teens busy and enjoying spending time together.  At the end of the hunt the team who completed the most tasks won.  After the hunt all of the teams enjoyed lunch together in the mall food court.

Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting

Baby Fuel

Our local pantry, NTX Community Food Pantry formerly Metro Relief put out the need for formula and baby food.  We were able to make a few phone calls to friends and collected eleven cases of formula.

The pantry is able to provide food to feed families in need based on donations. Typically they distribute meat (frozen or canned), peanut butter, fresh fruits and vegetables from the Community garden, as well as formula and baby care items to guests.

Harding Visit

This weekend Abigail and I headed to Searcy, Arkansas for Harding University's softball camp.  The camp was designed for juniors and seniors to showcase their skills for Harding's coach.

Harding is a Division II team and a member of the Great American Conference and the NCAA.  Abigail is NCAA Eligible to sign with a Division I or II team.

Over the weekend she was able to tour the campus which is absolutely beautiful. The school is located 50 miles northeast of Little Rock, with other global campuses. It is the largest private university in the state of Arkansas. The campus is comprised of 49 buildings located on 350 acres.

We ran into Blake and he took us on a tour around Searcy on Friday night.  Saturday night Abigail took in a Bison Basketball game and Andrew gave her a tour of the campus.  If it is where she decides to go to school it's nice to know that we have Texas friends already there!

Give an Answer

For Junior Toastmasters this evening Abigail was assigned the role of Table Topics Speaker.  Table Topics are impromptu speeches. Abigail pre-selected topics that the member would randomly draw and then give an impromptu talk for one to two minutes.

Table Topic helps improve confidence and impromptu speaking skills. Table Topics is intended to help members develop their ability to organize their thoughts quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic.  Even Ms. Vogel the group's Distinguished Toastmaster participates in the fun!

Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect I Peter 3:15

This Is My Circus

We took the morning off and joined the Baileys at Studio Movie Grill to see The Greatest Showman and it was fantastic!  The musical is loosely based on the life and career of P. T. Barnum.  The music is not time period but it is in the style of all the big musicals of the 1940's.

There is a solid message of standing up for the poor, down trodden and forgotten. You can't help but see that God’s intent, though, isn’t to send society’s outcasts to a circus. His desire is to see them loved within the body of Christ, and within a church.  Very heartwarming and moving!

It was great to share it with sweet friends who have always been so accepting of our sweet Frankie.  I'm looking forward to taking Frankie to it soon, but I wanted to first see how Hollywood portrayed these 'freaks' (as described by the circus protesters). As the parent of a super special kiddo, I'm always cautious what I put in front of my girl.  This was a sweet telling and focused on the positive and not the limitations.

So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Taco Tuesday & Teaching

Once a month our Heartfelt Friends get together for dinner, Bible study, and fellowship.  Our group of four 'Moms' prepare dinner and open up their home for our evening together.  We have six 'Sisters' in our group that are blessed by the moms hard work.

It's a wonderful evening with a home coked meal, no dishes and to be spiritually fed from God's Word by more seasoned Christian sisters.

Tonight's dinner theme was Taco Tuesday complete with sombreros and maracas!  I so appreciate the time they invest in our group. The Heartfelt Friends centers around the theme of Christian women living a life that purposefully serves God.

Our lesson tonight focused on Romans 6:13-14 and allowing God to control your life and ways to surrender control to God.  Our time together includes singing and praising God along with time for prayers and supplication.

Present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. Romans 6:13

Name that Chapter

Today I introduced my Bible Bowl class to a new game to help them learn where in 1 Samuel the Bible stories can be found.  I made large flash cards printed with the chapter headings in 1 Samuel.

I inserted a 'Name that Heading' card printed on card stock slid into Dry Erase Pockets I purchased on Amazon and dry erase markers for each student.

As I called off the Chapter Heading the students wrote their answers and when I called them to, 'Show their answer' they held up their dry erase boards.

If they got the correct answer they were awarded a token. Students who answered more than half of the headings correctly earned candy!

These dry erase pockets are great for many review games where the kids write in their answer. Earning tokens for a reward is a great motivator, too!

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

Little Sunday Selfies

Our Sunday Selfies this morning were sent from the church nursery.  Each quarter the ladies in the congregation take turns helping out in the nursery so that the young moms can recharge themselves in the morning service.

Nursery duty has become more fun since Abigail and I have been working at the church preschool.  We know know many of the kids and their parents a lot better.  The kiddos are more comfortable coming to people they know better.  Such sweet little people!

Whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward. Matthew 10:42

Softball Season

The holidays are definitely over our regular schedules have returned including softball. Abigail is back to softball practice with her high school team on Thursdays and Saturday.  Her select team practices on Sunday afternoons.

Her first high school ball this season is in two weeks and hopefully they will be ready! The girl is looking forward to this new season with HSAA!

Blessed be the Lord, my rock,

Canning Broccoli Soup

It's cold weather and the boy is leaving to return to college, so today I'm canning!  I find cooking enjoyable and soothing! Soup seemed like the perfect fix! I've been wanting to put up some broccoli soup.  We love Panera Bread's creamy broccoli and cheddar soup!

You can't safely can dairy products, so I'm canning the broccoli base and will add a little milk and cheddar when I heat it up!

Broccoli Soup
1-2 Tbs. olive oil (for sautéing onions)
3  yellow onions, diced
4 celery stalks, diced
4-6 cloves of garlic, chopped
5-6 lbs. broccoli, washed and coarsely chopped
1 cup julienned carrots
1 gallon (16 cups) chicken broth
Salt and pepper to taste

Remember no cream now, but when you cook up your canned soup later, add ¼ – ½ cup cream or milk and add a dash of nutmeg when you cook up later.

Heat oil and saute  onions, garlic and celery until beginning to soften.  Add  broccoli, and stir briefly with the onions, garlic and celery.  Add to broth along with carrots and bring to a simmer.  Because you’re about to cook this under extreme pressure you do not need to fully cook the broccoli, just get it soft enough to puree with an Hand Blender.  If you want a smooth soup puree a little longer with the immersion blender.  I split my soup into two bowls, pureeing one very smoothly and the other bowl I chose not to puree so my soup will have something to chew.

After pureeing, I combined both bowls and added salt and pepper to taste and get ready to can!

Keep the soup at simmer.

Fill hot sterilized jars, leaving 1-inch headspace.  Wipe the tops of the jars with vinegar and attach lids and rings.  Process in Pressure Canner with 10 pounds of pressure, pint jars for 60 minutes and quart jars for 75 minutes.

Recipe yields 12 pints or 6 quarts. When you pull the jars out of your canner they will not be as brilliant green as they were before they cooked.  But this is not an issue because when you serve it with milk and cheese added it will take on a creamy appearance.

I had just a little more soup than would fit in my jars so of course I added a 1/4 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar and a sprinkle of croutons! So good! Next time I'll serve it in bread bowl but because it is canned I can prepare it in just minutes with all the homemade goodness! Your mouth is watering isn't it?

“Set on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.”
2 Kings 4:38

Lunch Date

We enjoyed one more lunch date before the boy heads back to school.  There is nothing better after two weeks of Christmas and birthday dinners than Chick-fil-A!

And the only thing that makes a Chick-fil-A lunch even better is a game of spoons! These guys always travel with a deck of cards when they find out that the Mom's are getting together for lunch!

All the days of the afflicted are bad,

But a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

Happy New Year

I can't think of a better way to ring in the new year than surrounded by good friends!

After Bible Bowl we headed to Oklahoma to spend it with the Gungans, the newest Gungans and the Lowes! We arrived in time to worship at the Ada congregation.  It was fun seeing several friends from Owasso and McDermott at services tonight.

After services the kids went to see the latest Star Wars movie together.  After all it's become a tradition! While the kids went our for tacos and to the movies the parents went out to dinner.  It was so great to be able to hang out and laugh together!

After the movie the kids joined us at the Lowe's home to ring in the new year.  Highlights from our evening include in no particular order: puppies, fudge, laughter, sparkling cider, dressing Caleb, more laughter, hot cocoa, and . . . well you get the idea.

It was wonderful to have us all together, with Caleb and Richard bantering and the girls giggling! It was a perfect way to ring in 2018!

Begin the music, strike the timbrel,
play the melodious harp and lyre.
Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon,

and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival
